Johannes Gmeinder was born in 1976 in Constance. He completed his studies at the conservatoire Trossingen with Prof. Waldemar Wandel and at the university of arts in Berlin with Prof. Francois Benda. He became member of the European Union Youth Orchestras (EUYO) in 1996 and of the Stipendiat der Landesstiftung Rheinland Pfalz "Villa Musica" in 1998. He also joined the orchestral academy of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (Herbert von Karajan Stiftung).

Johannes Gmeinder played as auxiliary solo-clarinetist in renowned orchestras such as the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Bach Kollegium München, Bamberger Symphonikern, Symphonieorchester des Westdeutschen- and the Bayerischen Rundfunks, as well as in the radio philharmonic of the NDR Hannover and the Berliner Philharmoniker. During his carreer he had the opportunity to work with renowned conductors such as Zubin Metha, Günter Wand, Mariss Janssons, Claudio Abbado or Lorin Maazel.

His pedagogic commitment offered Johannes Gmeinder teaching positions at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt (2001-2003), at the Universität der Künste Berlin (2003-2004) and at the Musikhochschule Mannheim (2004-2005).

2004 Johannes Gmeinder became Professor of the clarinet at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz and in 2009 he was appointed Professor for clarinet and chamber music at the University of Music Saar. Since 2010 Johannes M. Gmeinder has been chairman of the Deutsche Klarinetten-Gesellschaft. As of 2011 he also represents Germany in the ICA (Internation Clarient Association) as National Chairperson.
